Burleigh locals since 2016

About Us

Simon and Buffie Scott opened Red Hot Cod in 2016, a Burleigh fish and chip shop run by locals. Nearly ten years on it has grown into a Bali-inspired beer garden and bar, with a Balinese menu to match.

Same fish. Whole new fry-up.

Simon grew up on the Coast. He surfs, he fishes, and before the Cod he was cooking, running bistros down at Evans Head and teaching seafood cookery at TAFE. The name is a wink at Red Hot Wok, which used to sit just up the road.

We opened in 2016 and did the fish and chip shop thing for years. Then we pulled the back courtyard apart and built what we had been talking about for ages. A Bali-style beer garden and bar with room for more than a hundred, our own Cod Lager on tap, live music Fridays and Saturdays, and space to hire for your own do.

The menu grew with it. Fish and chips, burgers, poke and Bali bowls, nasi goreng, gado gado and satay, all made fresh to eat in or take away.

Mila, our daughter, runs the kitchen and the floor, usually at the same time. One of us is always here.

We buy Australian, anywhere from Ballina to Broome, and it is all wild caught except the Tassie salmon. Sides get made by hand every morning. GF batter if you need it.

The Locals’ Pick

People voted us Burleigh’s best fish and chips, and top ten on the Coast. There is a surfboard on the wall that Joel Parkinson signed, thanking us for the best fish and chips going.
